Why Volunteer, Participate in Community Service, or Get a Job While in High School?

Getting involved in volunteer work, community service, or paid employment during high school can provide valuable experiences that help students grow both personally and professionally. These opportunities allow students to:

Develop important life and workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and time management.

Why It Matters for Bright Futures Scholarship Eligibility

For students in Florida, volunteer service, community service hours, or paid work experience can also help meet requirements for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. Bright Futures rewards students who demonstrate academic achievement and community involvement. By completing eligible volunteer service hours, paid work hours, or a combination of both, students can fulfill one of the key scholarship requirements while gaining valuable experience that prepares them for college and future careers.

Participating in these activities not only helps students become stronger scholarship candidates but also equips them with skills and experiences that can contribute to long-term success in higher education and the workforce.

Community Service Guidelines

What is Community Service?

An altruistic, uncompensated effort that benefits the community and/or special populations.

Community Service, in order to be considered for hours towards Bright Futures, must follow Florida Statute 1009.534: A student must identify a social problem, develop a plan for personal involvement in addressing the problem, and evaluate and reflect upon the experience.

What is Volunteer Service?

Unpaid activity that does not address a social issue or serve the community. These hours do not count toward Bright Futures eligibility.

Community Service needs to answer:

How have you served your community?
What social issue has your service addressed?
What have you learned from your service?
How have you grown as a result of your service?

How do I ensure my community service hours will be accepted?

Hours may begin after promotion from 8th grade.
Documentation must include supervisor signature, dates, total hours, and reflection.
Agency letterhead may be substituted if all required information is included.
Hours must be performed during non-school hours.
Keep copies of all submitted documentation.

Hours NOT acceptable for Community Service include:

Family-related activities.
Compensated hours.
Court-mandated service.
Service solely benefiting a religious congregation.
Course-required co-curricular activities.
Activities without adult supervision.
Donations.
Hours performed during the school day or submitted after graduation.

Community Service Ideas:

Environmental preservation, historical site protection, health and safety promotion, improving standards of living, supporting the arts, assisting people with disabilities, serving senior citizens, mentoring youth, or addressing another identified social problem.
